The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to submit the Import and Export (Control) Regulations No. 08 of 2026 to Parliament, making compliance with Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) mandatory for imported passenger car tyres and pneumatic tyres used in three-wheelers.
The proposal was submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, following recommendations from the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development.
The measures aim to ensure consumer safety and product quality while creating a fair competitive environment for local tyre manufacturers.
The updated regulations were introduced through Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2508/27, dated October 1, 2026, amending the existing standardisation requirements.
Under the new rules, imported passenger car tyres classified under HS Code 4011.10.90 must comply with Sri Lanka Standard 1212, while pneumatic tyres for three-wheeled vehicles under HS Code 4011.90.10 must meet Sri Lanka Standard 1347.
