The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to establish a National High Performance Centre in Diyagama at an estimated cost of Rs. 3,980 million to improve Sri Lanka’s competitiveness at future international sporting events, including the 2028, 2032 and 2036 Olympic Games.
The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Before the permanent facility is established, an interim high-performance centre will be set up at the Torrington Sports Complex in Colombo. The facility will use the existing spectator stands and the Sports Medical Institute to prepare elite athletes for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The decision follows recommendations from an expert committee appointed to address the lack of a structured, science-based high-performance system for sports development in Sri Lanka.
Construction of the permanent National High Performance Centre in Diyagama is scheduled to begin in 2027 and is expected to take three years.
