Strong Winds of Up to 70 kmph and Rough Seas Expected Around Sri Lanka

October 25, 2026

Strong winds of up to 70 kmph, rough seas and showers or thundershowers are expected in several sea areas around Sri Lanka today (October 25), the Department of Meteorology has warned.

In its marine weather forecast issued at 5.30 a.m., the Department said showers or thundershowers were expected at several locations in the sea areas surrounding the island.

South-westerly winds of 30–40 kmph may strengthen to 50–60 kmph in sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, with wave heights reaching 2–2.5 metres in waters extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.

The Department further warned that temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas could occur during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into deep-sea areas bounded by 10°N–20°N and 80°E–95°E until further notice, as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify further.
