Bangladesh Prime Minister Resigns and Flees to India Amid Deadly Protests

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled to India following weeks of violent protests that have resulted in nearly 300 deaths over the past month.

The resignation was confirmed by both the army and Bangladesh High Commission officials in Delhi. Reports indicate that Sheikh Hasina, accompanied by her sister, traveled to India via military helicopter, seeking “safe shelter” away from her official residence, according to Reuters.

On Sunday, at least 95 people, including 14 police officers, were killed in clashes in the capital. The violence has continued into Monday, with at least six more deaths reported in confrontations between police and protesters in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas.

The protests initially began with students demanding the abolition of a quota system for government jobs. However, the demonstrations have escalated into broader violence, involving clashes with police and pro-government activists, and resulted in over 200 deaths last month.
