In his first address since declaring martial law earlier this week, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol apologized for the distress caused but firmly stated he would not step down.
During his brief speech, Yoon expressed regret for the disruption and said he would leave it to his party to determine how to stabilize and govern the country. He also pledged not to repeat such actions in the future.
However, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung criticized the address as “very disappointing,” asserting that Yoon’s remarks failed to meet public expectations and deepened their sense of betrayal.
The President’s political future now lies in the hands of parliament, which is set to vote on whether to impeach him.
