The Sri Lanka Navy, the nation’s maritime defense force, commemorates its 74th anniversary today (December 9). Under the leadership of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, the Navy has launched a series of celebratory programs across all naval commands, embracing its enduring traditions and religious practices.
Advancements and Achievements
In honour of the occasion, 2138 sailors were promoted to higher ranks following the Commander’s recommendations. The promotions span several categories, including Ordinary Seaman, Able Seaman, and Master Chief Petty Officer, showcasing the Navy’s dedication to recognizing excellence among its personnel.
Tracing its roots back to the Naval Volunteer Force Ordinance of 1937, the Navy transitioned from a ceremonial entity to a formidable military force, particularly during the conflict era of the 1980s. Its pivotal role in the humanitarian operation that ended nearly three decades of terrorism remains a testament to its valor.
Today, the Sri Lanka Navy actively combats drug trafficking, piracy, and other maritime threats while upholding international maritime laws in collaboration with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). Notably, it will take command of the Combined Task Force 154 in January 2025, a significant milestone in its global reputation.
Religious Observances and Community Initiatives
Marking the anniversary, the Navy conducted multi-religious programs, including ceremonies at the Ruwanwelisaya, Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, and the Jummah Mosque, among others, to honor fallen heroes and invoke blessings on serving and retired personnel and their families.
Community welfare initiatives were also prominent, with blood donation campaigns organized across naval commands and welfare outreach to the families of fallen and missing naval heroes, demonstrating the Navy’s commitment to those who sacrificed for the nation.
Strategic Vision
Under its “Maritime Strategy 2030 and Beyond,” the Navy focuses on enhancing capabilities through advanced technology and professional development, aligning its efforts with national maritime ambitions.
Under the guidance of President and Commander in Chief Hon. Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Vice Admiral Perera, the Navy remains vigilant in its military, diplomatic, and constabulary roles, safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests and fostering a secure and stable oceanic region.
This anniversary underscores the Sri Lanka Navy’s rich legacy and its unwavering dedication to the nation.
