Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Ratnayake has announced that all drivers engaged in passenger transport must obtain a ‘Public Passenger Transport Permit’ by December 31.
The announcement was made at a meeting held in Ampara yesterday (20), where the Minister emphasized that preparations for issuing the permits are underway and enforcement will begin by the end of this year.
Minister Ratnayake also stressed that seat belts are now mandatory on all passenger vehicles. While some buses were originally manufactured without seat belts, he confirmed that modifications are being carried out.
“Some drivers are attempting to mislead authorities and the police by using the belt of a child’s school bag. It is not appropriate to entrust such drivers with the safety of 50 passengers. Therefore, only responsible drivers should be involved in public transport,” he said.
The Minister reiterated that every driver engaged in passenger transportation must obtain a public transport license by December 31 to ensure passenger safety and compliance with regulations.
