Approval from Religious Authorities Mandatory for Monks Travelling Abroad – Deputy Minister

May 1, 2026

Deputy Minister of Buddhist Education, Religious and Cultural Affairs Gamagedara Dissanayake says that stricter procedures will be enforced for Buddhist monks travelling overseas.

He stated that the Ministry will ensure proper implementation of existing regulations under the Ministry of Buddhist Education Religious and Cultural Affairs Sri Lanka.

According to the Deputy Minister, a system had previously required monks to obtain recommendations from their teacher, regional leadership, and the Mahanayake Thero of the respective Nikaya. However, due to various reasons, the process had not been consistently followed.

He noted that this procedure will now be strictly enforced moving forward.

Dissanayake further said that registrars representing all Nikayas had recently held discussions with Anura Kumara Dissanayake, where agreement was reached on several matters, including making it mandatory for monks to obtain approval from senior religious authorities before travelling abroad.

The move is aimed at strengthening oversight and maintaining proper administrative and religious discipline within the Buddhist clergy.
