The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the provision of more than Rs. 1 billion in equity capital to Lanka Metro Transit (Private) Company Limited to support infrastructure development and operational activities aimed at modernising Sri Lanka’s public transport system.
Lanka Metro Transit was incorporated on October 3, 2025, as a subsidiary of the Sri Lanka Transport Board under the Companies Act No. 7 of 2007.
The Colombo Urban Transport Pilot Project, launched with 10 low-floor buses purchased using funds allocated under the Clean Sri Lanka programme, has reportedly demonstrated strong commercial viability and public acceptance.
Following this, the company plans to introduce 112 additional buses in September.
The Government has also planned several infrastructure projects to support the expanded service, including:
- A fully equipped central workshop in Ekala.
- Modern bus depots in Thalangama, Kadawatha, Ratmalana and Homagama.
- Development of internal roads and bus stands.
Under the approved funding arrangement, Rs. 800 million will be provided in 2026 for infrastructure development, while a further Rs. 267.5 million will be allocated for operational activities in 2027.
The proposal, submitted by the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, has received Cabinet approval.
