Cabinet Approves Review of Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to reconsider the provisions of the Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024, which came into effect on June 27, 2024, and to propose necessary amendments.

Concerns Raised:

Various stakeholders have expressed concerns that the Act’s provisions, the roles and responsibilities of proposed institutions, and their implementation may fail to achieve the intended objectives. Critics argue that the Act could impose additional burdens on the electricity industry and consumers, hindering efforts to establish a secure and clean electricity sector.

Cabinet Response:

Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, emphasized the need to revisit the Act’s objectives, incorporating input from all relevant stakeholders to ensure the development of a sustainable and secure electricity sector.

Proposed Action:

A proposal by the Minister of Energy to form a committee has been approved. The committee will comprise:

  • Key Stakeholders
  • Policy Experts in the Power and Energy Sector

The committee will study the provisions of the Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024 and provide recommendations for amendments to better align with the sector’s long-term goals.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing stakeholder concerns and fostering a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Sri Lanka.
