CBSL Launches Digital Payment Awareness Programme in Trincomalee

June 3, 2026

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has organized a digital payment promotional programme in Trincomalee with the participation of Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and senior CBSL officials.

According to the Central Bank, the programme aims to raise awareness about digital payment methods among government officials, business communities, and the general public.

The event will be held on June 5 and 6 from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. at the car park near the Central Bus Stand in Trincomalee, with participation from banks, non-bank financial institutions, and other stakeholders.

The initiative forms part of CBSL’s nationwide campaign under the theme “Shaping the Future Through Digital Payments”, conducted in collaboration with financial institutions and industry partners.

The Central Bank noted that similar programmes previously held in Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Dambulla, and Kurunegala successfully increased awareness and enabled businesses and consumers to experience the benefits of digital payment systems.

During the programme, members of the public will receive personalized assistance from banks, finance companies, e-money service providers, and LankaPay (Pvt.) Ltd to register for and use various digital payment services, including the LANKAQR payment system.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase goods and services at discounted prices from merchant stalls established within the event premises, allowing them to practically experience digital payment methods.

Additionally, financial institutions are expected to conduct merchant engagement programmes in Trincomalee town to encourage businesses to adopt LANKAQR payment acceptance facilities, CBSL added.
