Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake has announced plans to expand the Colombo Metro Bus Service, which operates across Colombo and its suburbs, from late September.

The Minister has released route maps for the planned network through his social media accounts under the “Lanka Metro Transit” brand, with the service aimed at providing safer and more comfortable public transport.

The proposed expansion includes seven major routes connecting Colombo, its suburbs and several key transport hubs.

The new routes are:

  • CM 01: Makumbura – Pettah
  • CM 02: Millennium City – Colombo Fort
  • CM 03: Kadawatha – Makumbura
  • CM 04: Dematagoda – Panadura
  • CM 05: Battaramulla – Ekala
  • CM 06: Kollupitiya Circular Route
  • CM 08: Kahathuduwa – Pettah / SLIIT

The network will cover several major areas, including Maharagama, Nugegoda, Battaramulla, Malabe, Dehiwala, Moratuwa and Ja-Ela.

The published route maps outline the geographical coverage of the proposed network, key stops and major connecting roads.

However, while the Minister has indicated that the expansion will begin in late September, specific commencement dates for individual routes have not yet been announced.

Details regarding bus frequency, fares and operating timetables have also not been included in the published route maps.
