Controversy Deepens Over Former Speaker Asoka Ranwala’s Doctorate

The debate surrounding the academic credentials of former Speaker Asoka Ranwala has taken an unexpected turn, with NPP MP K. Illankumaran from Jaffna referring to Ranwala as a “Medical Doctor.”

Ranwala recently stepped down following allegations of falsifying his educational qualifications. However, in a statement made during a northern-based YouTube interview, Illankumaran defended Ranwala, claiming:

“No, this doctorate was not awarded by himself but was created by the people. He went to Japan in 1989, comes from a family of medical doctors, and also studied medicine in Japan. He has earned a doctorate, which we all know. There is no requirement for a medical doctorate to be Speaker of Parliament.”

Public Reaction

Illankumaran’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism, with many accusing him of either being misinformed or attempting to mislead the public. The suggestion that Ranwala’s doctorate was “created by the people” has particularly raised eyebrows, adding to the skepticism surrounding the legitimacy of Ranwala’s academic background.

The Bigger Picture

This controversy comes amidst growing scrutiny of public figures and their qualifications, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability. Observers argue that such incidents risk undermining public trust in political leaders and institutions.

The debate continues as critics demand clarity on Ranwala’s credentials and question the credibility of Illankumaran’s claims.
