The Court of Appeal today dismissed the writ petition filed by legal representatives of suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, which sought to annul the arrest order issued by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.
The Court directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to proceed with the immediate arrest of Tennakoon and present him before the court.
The writ petition, submitted by Tennakoon on March 12, was taken up for consideration, with the Court of Appeal scheduled to deliver its ruling today. The decision to dismiss the petition was delivered by Court of Appeal Justices Mohammed Thahir Laffar and Sarath Dissanayake.
Tennakoon is sought in connection with a 2023 shooting incident at a prominent hotel in Weligama. The Matara Magistrate’s Court had previously issued an order for his arrest, prompting Tennakoon to file a writ petition in the Court of Appeal, seeking an interim order to suspend the magistrate’s directive.
However, in a recent development, the Matara Magistrate’s Court issued an open warrant for Tennakoon’s immediate arrest, following a request by the CID.
