The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) expects to complete the renovation of 29 oil storage tanks and the construction of a new oil pipeline within the next two years under the next phase of the Trincomalee Oil Tank Complex development project.
Speaking to The Sunday Morning, CPC Managing Director Dr. Mayura Netthikumarage said the tender documents for the renovation of the 29 tanks have been prepared and are currently awaiting approval from the relevant procurement committees.
“We expect to complete the development of these 29 tanks within two years. The tenders will be called immediately after the necessary approvals are granted,” he said.
The CPC has already completed the renovation of two oil tanks, while tenders have been invited for the refurbishment of an additional three tanks.
According to Dr. Netthikumarage, the Trincomalee Oil Tank Complex comprises a total of 99 oil tanks. Of these, 61 are owned by Trinco Petroleum Terminal Ltd., a joint venture between Sri Lanka and India, 24 are owned by the CPC, and the remaining 14 are owned by Lanka IOC (LIOC).
He further stated that the proposed new oil pipeline, which will be constructed by the CPC, is also expected to be completed within the next two years.
Meanwhile, Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilake recently led an inspection tour to review the progress of development activities at the Trincomalee Port, the oil tank complex, the proposed pipeline system and the China Bay Airport.
The Government expects these projects to strengthen Sri Lanka’s energy security while enhancing the country’s fuel storage and distribution capacity.
