The death of a senior official attached to the Department of External Resources Sri Lanka, who had been interdicted over the alleged misappropriation of USD 2.5 million in Treasury funds, has been ruled a suicide.
Sri Lanka Police stated that a four-member panel of Judicial Medical Consultants concluded that all injuries found on the body were self-inflicted and that the cause of death was suicide.
The deceased was identified as Ranga Rajapaksa, an Assistant Director of the Ministry of Finance’s Department of External Resources.
He was found dead at his residence in Kuliyapitiya on Friday (30). According to police, his daughter first noticed him lying in the garden and alerted other family members.
Investigators who arrived at the scene observed bloodstains nearby and noted several injuries on the body, including wounds to one leg and an arm. A small knife was also recovered from the scene.
The incident was initially investigated as a suspicious death to determine whether it involved homicide, suicide, or an accident.
The Kuliyapitiya Magistrate’s Court conducted a magisterial inquiry before the body was transferred to the Kuliyapitiya Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The official had been under interdiction in connection with investigations into the alleged Treasury fund misappropriation case.
