The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) says the number of dengue cases reported in the Colombo District has surpassed 12,000, as infections continue to rise across the country.
According to the latest data, 12,017 dengue cases have been reported from the Colombo District so far this year, accounting for 20.43 percent of the national total.
The NDCU also announced that the total number of dengue cases reported islandwide has increased to 58,810, while the death toll has risen to 39.
Health authorities said 2,604 new dengue cases were reported within the past 24 hours, with 3,422 cases recorded during the first three days of July alone.
Among the past seven months, June recorded the highest number of infections, with 21,547 cases. The monthly breakdown is as follows:
- January – 7,866 cases
- February – 5,721 cases
- March – 6,013 cases
- April – 5,651 cases
- May – 8,590 cases
- June – 21,547 cases
At the provincial level, the Western Province continues to report the highest number of infections, with 30,876 cases, representing 52.5 percent of the national total.
The Southern Province has reported 9,316 cases, followed by the Sabaragamuwa Province with 5,129 cases, and the Central Province with 4,542 cases.
District-wise, Colombo has recorded the highest number of cases (12,017), followed closely by Gampaha with 11,740 cases.
Other districts with high case numbers include Matara (4,262), Kalutara (3,955), Kandy (3,575), Ratnapura (3,530), and Galle (3,364).
The Mullaitivu District has reported the lowest number of dengue cases this year, with 35 infections.
Health authorities have currently identified 142 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions as high-risk dengue zones.
In view of the escalating situation, the National Dengue Control Unit has urged the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, maintain clean surroundings, and actively support dengue prevention efforts to help curb the spread of the disease.
