The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has focused on strengthening the professionalism of the teaching service, addressing teacher shortages and resolving structural issues in the education sector.
The issues were discussed when the committee met in Parliament under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
Discussions focused on improving the quality of school education, filling teacher vacancies, streamlining the teacher transfer process and providing necessary facilities for schools in difficult and underserved areas.
The committee also discussed expediting the new teacher recruitment process to address shortages, particularly in Science and Mathematics, while identifying areas with the greatest need for teachers.
Special attention was also drawn to schools facing significant teacher shortages, including schools in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, with measures to be taken to address their staffing requirements.
