Election Commission Discusses Campaign Spending Limits with Party Secretaries

The General Secretaries of political parties contesting the upcoming local government elections were summoned to the Election Commission today for discussions on regulating campaign expenditure.

Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake stated that the meeting focused on establishing spending limits for candidates, with an official spending cap to be announced via Gazette notification in due course.

The local government elections, scheduled for May 6, will see nearly 80,000 candidates competing for positions, representing 107 recognized political parties and 49 independent groups.

Meanwhile, nominations for the Mannar, Poonakary, and Dehiattakandiya Pradeshiya Sabhas will open on March 24 and close at 12 noon on March 27. The deadline for depositing bonds for these local government bodies has been set for 12 noon on March 26.
