The Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority has announced that it will begin fining passengers who travel without tickets on private buses in the province starting October 1.
Authority Chairman Gamini Jasinghe told Divaina that road inspectors will regularly board buses to check whether passengers have obtained valid tickets for their destinations.
Under the new regulation, any passenger found without a ticket will be fined Rs. 100 in addition to paying double the bus fare.
The Authority further stated that fines will also be imposed on bus conductors who fail to issue tickets to passengers.
