Former Millaniya Councillor Arrested Over Defamatory Comments Against NPP MP

Former Millaniya Local Councillor Raveendra Namunni, a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly making defamatory statements on social media targeting National Peoples’ Power (NPP) Kalutara District MP Nilanthi Kottahachchi.

The arrest followed a complaint filed with the CID by MP Kottahachchi through her legal representative on December 31. Attorney-at-Law Namal Rajapakshe, representing the MP, highlighted that the comments were false and intended to damage her reputation.

According to Rajapakshe, the defamatory statements falsely accused the MP of visiting a hotel with Namunni in exchange for money. He described the accusations as a malicious personal attack fueled by political rivalry.

Speaking to the media, Rajapakshe called for politicians to act with integrity and respect, emphasizing that MP Kottahachchi is not only a public representative but also a woman, a wife, and a mother of young children.

The incident underscores the growing concern over the misuse of social media for political slander and the need for accountability in public discourse.
