A German national was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in connection with an ongoing investigation into a suspicious incident involving a laptop handed over to a security officer at the Russian Embassy in Colombo.
According to police, the incident occurred on April 28, 2025, when a foreign woman reportedly handed a laptop to a security officer at the Russian Embassy and fled the scene. The Cinnamon Gardens Police launched an investigation, which was later joined by the Colombo South Division Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Through further inquiries, investigators identified a German woman as the prime suspect. On May 4, a court imposed a travel ban on her pending the outcome of the investigation.
However, the suspect attempted to leave the country via Katunayake Airport on May 7, in violation of the travel restriction. She was apprehended by airport police and handed over to the Cinnamon Gardens Police.
The suspect was later produced before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court and released on bail.
