The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has launched a nationwide token strike today (31) from 8:00 a.m., citing several demands including concerns over alleged unlawful transfers of doctors.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa stated that the strike is being carried out across hospitals island-wide.
However, he assured that essential healthcare services will continue, noting that the strike will not affect maternity hospitals, children’s hospitals, the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama, specialized kidney units, tri-forces hospitals, and the National Institute of Mental Health.
Dr. Sugathadasa also warned that stronger trade union action could follow if authorities fail to address their concerns.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Health Hansaka Wijemuni downplayed the likelihood of widespread disruption, stating that historically, doctors have not engaged in large-scale strikes. He added that while the government is open to hearing grievances, he does not believe such action can be sustained.
Authorities and health officials are expected to closely monitor the situation as the strike unfolds.
