Government Aims to Make Teachers and Principals Among Top 10 Highest-Paid Professions

The government is taking decisive steps to address salary disparities in the education sector, with plans to elevate five key education services, including teachers and principals, to be among the country’s 10 highest-paid professions, according to Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe.

Speaking at an event in Maharagama, the Deputy Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to improving remuneration and tackling long-standing salary issues in the education sector.

  • Salary Increases in Upcoming Budget:
    Deputy Minister Jayasinghe assured that the upcoming budget, to be presented next month, will include a salary increase for public servants, emphasizing the government’s focus on public sector wage reforms.
  • Addressing Salary Disparities:
    Responding to concerns about the two-thirds salary disparity for teachers, Jayasinghe revealed that preliminary discussions are underway to resolve the issue.
  • Top 10 Salary Scales for Educators:
    Plans are being developed to include five key education services—teachers, principals, educational administrators, teacher educators, and teacher advisors—among the top 10 highest-paid professions in Sri Lanka.
  • Enhancing Education Standards:
    The Deputy Minister highlighted the dual focus on adjusting salaries and improving the quality of educational services to elevate the overall standards of education in the country.
