Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has criticized the government’s handling of assistance for those affected by Cyclone Ditva, claiming the compensation process has largely failed.
He said reports from across the island indicate serious shortcomings in the delivery of relief and financial support.
The MP noted that while some initial payments have been made, the assistance required for house repairs and new construction is being provided at an extremely slow pace.
He also pointed to delays in allowances for schoolchildren affected by the disaster, with complaints emerging from multiple areas.
The MP questioned when the government would release the necessary funds in full, warning that continued delays would place further strain on already vulnerable communities.
