A high-level discussion on establishing a Single-Window approval mechanism for Sri Lanka’s film tourism sector was held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (30) under the patronage of Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
The proposed mechanism is one of the key decisions taken by the Presidential Task Force overseeing the implementation of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Programme.
During the meeting, officials noted that foreign producers seeking permission to film movies, documentaries, television commercials, music videos, and other productions in Sri Lanka currently have to obtain approvals from multiple government institutions. This has resulted in lengthy procedures and delays in granting approvals.
To address these challenges, stakeholders discussed the framework required to establish a streamlined Single-Window approval system, enabling applicants to complete the approval process through a single coordinating mechanism.
The discussion also focused on building consensus among relevant institutions, identifying potential implementation challenges, proposing practical solutions, and determining a timeline for introducing the new system.
Officials expressed confidence that the successful implementation of the Single-Window approval mechanism would simplify approval procedures, improve the ease of doing business for international film producers, and position Sri Lanka as a more attractive destination for film, television, and commercial productions.
The initiative is also expected to strengthen the country’s film tourism industry and enhance Sri Lanka’s competitiveness as a global filming destination.
