Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has stressed the urgent need for the government to take decisive steps to ensure the continuation of the GSP+ tariff concession.
Addressing the media, Karunanayake highlighted that under the UNP government, the minimum tariff rate for exports to the European Union was significantly reduced to 23%. However, with the future of the concession now uncertain, he urged the government to either repeal the existing Prevention of Terrorism Act or introduce an alternative, in line with the European Union’s recommendations.
The MP also underscored the government’s responsibility to properly implement the commitments made to secure the GSP+ concession. He further noted that Sri Lanka must provide a definitive response to the European Commission by 2028, emphasizing that discussions with EU representatives are ongoing and require a well-prepared response from the government.
