Government Ready for Referendum if Required for 22nd Amendment

August 20, 2026

Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa says the Government is prepared to hold a referendum if the Supreme Court determines that a two-thirds majority in Parliament is required to pass the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

Speaking at a public meeting, Minister Jayatissa said the Government is ready to proceed with parliamentary approval or a referendum, depending on the Supreme Court’s determination, which is expected by the end of September or October.

He stressed that the proposed amendment has been introduced in the public interest and said the Government would continue with the reform process.

“If a two-thirds majority in Parliament is required according to the Supreme Court ruling, we are ready to act accordingly, and if a referendum is required, we are ready to do so,” Jayatissa said.
