The Irrigation Department reports that continuous heavy rainfall has led to the overflow of a majority of Sri Lanka’s major and medium-sized reservoirs.
Currently, 55 out of the 73 major reservoirs managed by the department are overflowing, alongside over 60 medium-sized tanks. The situation is most critical in the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Puttalam districts, where all reservoirs have exceeded their capacities.

- Kurunegala: 9 of 10 tanks overflowing
- Monaragala: 2 of 3 tanks overflowing
- Trincomalee: 4 of 5 tanks overflowing
- Mannar: 2 of 4 tanks overflowing
Warning to Residents
The Irrigation Department has urged communities living downstream of these reservoirs to remain vigilant as water levels continue to rise, posing potential flood risks.
The department continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to follow updates and safety instructions to mitigate risks associated with the heavy rainfall.
