India Strongly Protests Sri Lanka’s Firing on Fishermen, Summons Envoy

India has lodged a strong protest with Sri Lanka following an incident where the Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire on Indian fishermen near Jaffna, injuring two from Karaikal.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Sri Lanka’s Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi, expressing serious objections over the firing and the repeated detention of Indian fishermen. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that 13 Indian fishermen were detained, with five injured, including two seriously. India has condemned the Sri Lankan Navy’s actions and reiterated its demand for an immediate end to such incidents.

Meanwhile, six detained Indian fishermen were released earlier in the day and sent back to Chennai, amid escalating tensions over the issue.
