The Department of Meteorology has warned that significant rainfall could affect several parts of Sri Lanka over the next ten days due to prevailing El Niño conditions.
Director General of Meteorology Ajith Wijemanna said there is an increased risk of heavy rain, landslides and flooding in the coming days.
Speaking at a media briefing, Wijemanna stated that preparations had been made to respond to the El Niño-related weather conditions. However, he urged authorities and the public to remain vigilant, warning that adverse weather could intensify in the coming months.
He explained that October and November usually bring frequent weather disturbances to the Bay of Bengal. The influence of El Niño could worsen these conditions, resulting in heavier rainfall and a greater risk of floods and landslides.
Wijemanna said higher rainfall is expected in the northeastern parts of the island, while the Northern and Eastern provinces are likely to receive normal rainfall in December. He added that the Indian Ocean Dipole phenomenon could increase the risk of flash floods in these areas.
He also warned that higher temperatures and reduced rainfall are expected between February and April 2027, stressing the need for careful and strategic management of water resources in the months ahead.
