Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Citing Health Concerns

Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has tendered his resignation, citing health concerns and the need to prioritize ongoing medical treatment. His resignation, submitted on Monday (21) to President Droupadi Murmu, takes immediate effect in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.

In his letter, Dhankhar expressed deep gratitude to President Murmu for her unwavering support and commended their productive and cordial working relationship during his tenure. He also extended his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet, acknowledging their valuable cooperation throughout his term.

Reflecting on his time in office, the 74-year-old stated, “I have learned immensely during my tenure,” and noted that the warmth shown by Members of Parliament would remain a lasting memory. “It has been a true honour to serve during this transformational era in our nation’s history,” he added.

Dhankhar, who assumed office in August 2022 as India’s 14th Vice President, is a seasoned lawyer and former Governor of West Bengal. His tenure as governor was marked by frequent clashes with the Mamata Banerjee-led state government over issues including corruption allegations, political violence, and alleged politicization of administration and educational institutions.

As he steps down, Dhankhar reaffirmed his pride in India’s global rise and expressed strong confidence in the country’s future trajectory.
