Dr. Krishan Jude Jayamaha, Consultant Virologist at the National Influenza Centre of the Medical Research Institute, says a rapid increase in Influenza A (H1N1) cases is currently being observed in Sri Lanka.
Laboratory samples analyzed by the National Influenza Centre have frequently tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1), he said.
Dr. Jayamaha urged the public to seek medical advice before taking medication for fever, body aches, or other influenza-related symptoms.
He particularly advised people not to self-medicate if a fever lasts for more than two days and to consult a doctor without delay.
He also cautioned people experiencing influenza symptoms about the use of painkillers and other medications.
Pregnant women, elderly people, and children under two years of age are among those at higher risk of developing complications from influenza. They are therefore advised to seek medical attention promptly when symptoms appear.
Doctors have also urged the public to remain vigilant as dengue is currently spreading in Sri Lanka and can cause symptoms similar to those of influenza.
The public is advised to avoid self-diagnosis and self-medication and to seek professional medical advice when symptoms occur
