While in Tokyo, the President attended a breakfast meeting organized by the Japan–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Association at the Imperial Hotel.
During the discussions, the Association’s members made an unusual request — they asked Sri Lanka to gift two female elephant calves for the Tokyo Zoo.
They explained that a modern, temperature-controlled enclosure with ample space had already been constructed to house the elephants, but it currently remains empty.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, who was present at the meeting, clarified that there is an ongoing court case concerning the gifting of elephants. He assured that the request would be considered once the legal proceedings are concluded.
