Laugfs Gas Orders New Shipment as Authorities Move to Ease Islandwide Shortage

February 20, 2026

Laugfs Gas says gas stocks have been ordered for delivery to the Colombo Port, with operational plans already in place to resume islandwide distribution once the shipment arrives.

The update comes amid reports of a gas shortage over the past few days, which was raised in Parliament by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, who questioned Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe over the supply disruption and growing public concern.

Minister Samarasinghe said the issue emerged over the last two weeks after Laugfs Gas suspended distribution, prompting many consumers to switch to Litro Gas.

“This problem has arisen over the last two weeks as Laugfs Gas suspended its distribution. Consumers have therefore reacted and shifted to Litro Gas,” the Minister said.

He added that 1,500 metric tons of gas will be released today, tomorrow, and Saturday to help address the shortage.

Meanwhile, Laugfs Gas has been instructed to resolve its distribution issues immediately. The Minister said the company is expected to receive its next gas shipment on February 25, after which regular supply is expected to stabilize.
