Western Province Governor Hanif Yusuf has proposed transforming the 350-metre Colombo Lotus Tower into what he described as the largest Christmas tree in Southeast Asia this festive season.
He made the proposal while attending the launch of PickMe’s Colombo Connect digital system at the Lotus Tower.
The proposal is aimed at boosting Colombo’s tourism appeal during the Christmas season. However, it has not yet been confirmed as a formal government decision.
Details regarding the estimated cost, implementation timeline and the response of Lotus Tower management have not yet been disclosed.
The proposal could potentially make use of the Lotus Tower’s existing LED lighting system, avoiding some of the construction costs and delays associated with a previous attempt to build a giant artificial Christmas tree at Galle Face in 2016.
Governor Yusuf said Colombo should be decorated with festive lighting to promote tourism and local businesses. He also called on the private sector to participate by decorating hotels, restaurants, shops, businesses and homes across the city.
“I want to make the Lotus Tower the largest Christmas tree in Southeast Asia this Christmas,” he said, adding that he hoped to make this Christmas one of the best in the region.
