The swimming pool of the Mannar District Sports Complex was officially declared open for athletes yesterday (3) under the patronage of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage.
Located in Naruvilkulam within the Nanattan Divisional Secretariat Division, the complex was constructed at a cost of Rs. 94 million through the Department of Sports Development.
Speaking at the event, Minister Gamage said that during his visit to Mannar in January this year, he identified the sports needs of children in the area and promised to establish a sports complex within a year.
“Today, we are fulfilling that promise,” the Minister stated.
He further noted that while previous administrations had given limited attention to the development of the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the current government has prioritized these regions.
The Minister added that a 400-meter running track and other facilities at the complex will also be completed within a year.
“Our goal is to ensure equal sporting opportunities for children in all districts, without neglecting any region, and to support their journey toward international victories. The Mission Olympic program is part of this broader initiative,” Minister Gamage said.
