The Ministry of Digital Economy announced that steps are being taken to remove surcharges currently imposed on debit and credit card payments.
According to the Ministry, preliminary discussions have been held with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Department of Inland Revenue to assess the proposal and its financial implications. These talks have also explored ways to offset the costs that consumers currently bear when using cards for transactions.
As part of Sri Lanka’s transition towards a cashless society, the Ministry stated that all transactions will gradually move toward QR code-based mobile payments in the future.
