Ministry Resumes Construction of Halted Housing Schemes to Address Growing Demand

The Ministry of Urban Development, Construction, and Housing has announced plans to restart housing projects that were previously suspended, aiming to provide housing for underserved populations.

Priority to Address Housing Shortages
Secretary to the Ministry, Ranjith Ariyaratne, emphasized the ministry’s commitment to ensuring house ownership for every individual. With nearly one million people identified as lacking adequate housing, priority will be given to areas with the highest demand. Among those, 65,000 individuals reside within Colombo’s urban limits, highlighting a critical need in the capital.

Targeted Construction Based on Data
The ministry plans to launch housing projects in strategically selected areas, guided by population statistics and housing census data. These initiatives aim to maximize impact and cater to communities in dire need of comfortable living conditions.

This renewed focus on housing development underscores the government’s dedication to improving living standards and addressing urban housing challenges.
