Nearly 30,000 Houses in High-Risk Landslide Areas Require Relocation

September 1, 2026

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has revealed that nearly 30,000 houses located in high-risk landslide-prone areas are in conditions that require relocation.

NBRO Senior Scientist Wasantha Senadeera said 16,746 of these houses, which were affected by the “Ditwa” disaster, are located within high-risk zones.

He further stated that the situation has reached a level where residents of these houses need to be evacuated.

According to Senadeera, the process of providing alternative plots of land to residents affected by the risk has already commenced.
