New Law Requires Seat Belts for All Vehicle Occupants on Expressways

October 2, 2025

An extraordinary gazette notification has been issued mandating that drivers and all passengers, including those in back seats, wear seat belts while traveling on expressways.

The notification was issued by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake.

According to the gazette, the driver’s seat belt must be a standardized three-point belt, running diagonally across the body and laterally across the waist. Other seats, including front-row passenger seats, must have a standardized two-point or more lateral belt, depending on the seat design.

This move aims to enhance road safety and reduce fatalities and injuries in the event of accidents on expressways.
