Nine Chinese Nationals Arrested at BIA Over Alleged Cybercrime Activities

A total of nine Chinese nationals have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake early this morning (16) for allegedly attempting to engage in cybercrime-related activities.

Airport customs officials also seized electronic communication equipment valued at approximately Rs. 24 million.

According to reports, the group had arrived from Kunming, China, on a China Eastern Airlines flight (MU-6912) at around 12:25 a.m.

The suspects were found in possession of 383 used mobile phones, 101 tablet computers, and 6 Wi-Fi routers, which had been concealed by taping them to their bodies and hiding them within their clothing.

They are currently being detained by customs officials as further investigations are underway.
