Over 400 Nominations Rejected in 2025 Local Government Election Process

The nomination process for the 2025 Local Government Elections was conducted across all 25 districts from March 17 to noon on March 20, according to Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake.

A total of 336 local government institutions received nominations, with nearly 2,900 groups contesting—around 2,260 of them representing political parties. However, nearly 425 nominations were rejected.

Ratnayake explained that a Nomination Board reviews all submissions under Section 28 of the Act. Any nomination failing to meet the legal criteria is rejected, with the concerned groups notified in writing about the reasons for disqualification.
