The Committee on Public Finance (CoPF) has reported a 22% increase in liquor production over the past two months, with revenue growing by 23%. This was revealed during a recent Parliamentary Committee meeting chaired by MP Dr. Harsha de Silva.
Officials from the Ministry of Finance stated that efforts are underway to introduce a new category of liquor aimed at reducing illicit alcohol consumption.
The Committee also reviewed and approved a proposal to increase excise duty on liquor under Excise Notification No. 01/2025, issued under Section 22 of the Excise Ordinance (Chapter 52).
However, Members of Parliament raised concerns that higher taxes could drive people toward the consumption and production of illicit liquor. In response, officials assured that systematic raids are being conducted to combat illegal liquor operations.
