A police officer on duty at the Galoya Police checkpoint on the Habarana-Trincomalee Road tragically lost his life in a road accident last night (December 26).
The incident occurred when a tipper truck, allegedly out of the driver’s control, collided with the officer during vehicle inspections. The police officer was dragged by the truck, which subsequently collided with a lorry and a car.
Despite being rushed to the Habarana Hospital with serious injuries, the 56-year-old Police Sergeant succumbed to his injuries. The officer, a resident of Bathiyagama, Kantale, was attached to the Habarana Police Station.
The accident also injured another police officer, a woman passenger, a 4-month-old baby in the car, and the lorry driver. The injured lorry driver was transferred from Habarana Hospital to Dambulla Hospital for further treatment.
The body of the deceased officer has been placed at the Polonnaruwa Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
The tipper truck driver responsible for the fatal accident has been arrested, and the Athimale Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
