Political Debate Erupts in Tamil Nadu Over Calls for Vijay to Become PM Candidate

September 1, 2026

Political tensions have intensified in Tamil Nadu following calls for TVK leader and Tamil actor Vijay to be considered as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate for India’s 2029 general election.

The campaign gained momentum after a recently released *Mood of the Nation* opinion poll placed Vijay third among potential Prime Ministerial candidates.

However, the proposal has triggered strong opposition from the ruling DMK and its coalition partner, the Congress party.

DMK Secretary R.S. Bharathi mocked the campaign, saying that if party members continued making such claims, they might soon suggest that Vijay could become the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The issue has also created tensions within the Tamil Nadu Congress. Congress ministers in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet have reportedly warned that they could resign from their ministerial positions if the TVK does not officially support Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as the opposition alliance’s Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2029 election.

Tamil Nadu Congress chief Manickam Tagore has also criticized the opinion polls and their statistics on social media, arguing that numbers do not necessarily reflect the truth and that opinion polls do not always represent the voice of the people.
