Premadasa Calls for United Opposition to Restore Truthful, Accountable Governance

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has announced that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is ready to take the lead in uniting all opposition forces under a common vision to restore a transparent and effective public service, countering what he described as a culture of lies.

Delivering a special statement on Tuesday (May 7), Premadasa thanked voters who supported the SJB despite what he called a politically hostile environment marked by “insults, threats, mudslinging, conspiracies, and challenges.”

He said the SJB stands prepared to assume responsibility for guiding a united opposition, in response to what he described as a clear mandate from the people. “The time has come for all opposition forces to come together. The people have sent us a message – to unite, stand for truth, and build a government that respects their voice,” he said.

Premadasa highlighted the government’s dwindling public support, noting that confidence had sharply declined despite the overwhelming mandates it received during recent Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

“In just six months, public confidence in the government has plummeted. The people have spoken loud and clear – they want change, and they want unity in the opposition,” he emphasized.

He also criticized the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), accusing the party of conducting its local government election campaign with presidential-level intensity and politicizing religion.

Reaffirming the SJB’s commitment, Premadasa said the party is ready to lead a coalition of all opposition groups based on transparency, principled unity, and genuine service to the public.

“As defenders of democracy, we must honor the public will. The SJB is ready to rise to the top, to lead this united front, and to fulfill the people’s demand for truthful, accountable governance,” he declared.

Concluding his address, Premadasa stated, “I bow to all those who upheld democracy and voted for truth. Your support was a stand against deception and a vote for a better Sri Lanka.”
