Preserving international confidence is crucial despite conflicting statements with IMF, says Ravi Karunanayake

September 23, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake said that despite conflicting statements between the government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding the loan programme, Sri Lanka’s priority should be to steer the economy forward while maintaining the country’s credibility in the international community.

Speaking to the media, Karunanayake stressed the importance of maintaining a sound economic strategy and financial stability even after the IMF programme concludes.

He said Sri Lanka can secure continued support from international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, only by maintaining a credible economic and financial roadmap.

Karunanayake further stated that Sri Lanka should ensure that its economic policies remain aligned with national interests while engaging with international financial institutions, preserving the country’s economic independence and avoiding excessive economic pressure.
