President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced that the daily wage for plantation workers will be increased to Rs. 1,750 this year.
The announcement was made during a ceremony in Bandarawela to hand over land ownership documents to members of Sri Lanka’s Malayagam community. The initiative is part of efforts to implement the Hatton Declaration and the policy statement “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life”, which aims to translate policy commitments into tangible benefits by granting housing rights to the community.
At the event, entitlement certificates were distributed to 2,000 beneficiaries under Phase IV of the Indo–Lanka Housing Project, which will provide a total of 10,000 houses. The Indian government will fund Rs. 2.8 million for each house, while the Sri Lankan government will contribute Rs. 400,000 for essential infrastructure development.
The event was also attended by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha.
