A discussion between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was held this morning (07) at the Presidential Secretariat.
The meeting took place as part of the mid-term phase of the fifth review, ahead of the release of the sixth tranche of IMF support under the ongoing debt restructuring program.
President Dissanayake reiterated that the government’s primary objective is to rescue the country from economic bankruptcy and steer it towards sustainable development through a well-structured strategic program. He expressed deep appreciation for the support extended by the IMF in advancing this effort.
The President further noted that the government aims to exceed the IMF’s targets to build a stronger, more resilient national economy. He stressed the importance of attracting both local and foreign investment and emphasized the need to create a business-friendly environment to accelerate economic recovery.
IMF representatives commended the government’s ongoing reforms and measures to revive the economy. Both parties also discussed the next steps to be taken in the reform process.
The Government of Sri Lanka was represented by Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, Minister of Labor and Deputy Minister of Economic Development; Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance; R. Aponso, Senior Advisor to the President; Duminda Hulangamuwa; and Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, along with other officials.
The IMF delegation included Head of Mission Evan Papageorgiou and Permanent Representative to Sri Lanka Martha Woldemichael, among other representatives. (PMD)
